Questions and answers

Runewing works in any browser. You can also add it to your home screen and open it like an app.

Runewing

What is Runewing?

A letter with rules. You write a message, choose a seal and a courier, and set how it opens: at a certain time, after a riddle, or only once. Then you send the link in any messenger.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

Writing, sealing and sending a letter by link is free and needs no sign-up. Signing in with Google is only for a profile with a nickname, your tribe and your letter list on every device. Extra seals and couriers (Runewing+) are coming later.

Without an account you can send up to two letters a day, and only by link. Writing to someone’s @nickname needs sign-in and a shared tribe.

Who are the couriers and when do they fly?

A courier carries your letter: a raven, an owl, a moth and others. The courier you choose decides what the letter is written on.

Each courier keeps its own hours: day birds fly by day, night ones by night. If the hours run out on the way, the courier rests and flies on. See the courier schedule.

A courier is on its way from about an hour for the fastest ones to 4-8 hours for the raven, who in return flies at any hour. The letter form shows when your courier should arrive.

Whose time does a letter open by?

At midnight means midnight in the recipient’s time zone. On a date also uses the recipient’s time by default; switch to My time to use your own clock. Courier hours on the schedule are counted by the sender’s clock.

How do I send runes to my tribe?

Sign in with Google, pick a nickname in Settings and find people in Find people. When you follow each other, you are in one tribe: their profile shows Send runes, and the letter lands straight in their Received. Only your tribe can write to you directly; you can still send a link to anyone. If someone bothers you, use Block or Report this profile on their page.

Block removes your follows both ways and takes the person out of your tribe. For one minute after that you can tap Undo, and your follows come back. Later you can unblock in the Blocked list, but you’ll have to follow each other again.

What are whispers?

Whispers are short messages for your tribe: no courier, no seal, no waiting. Over a week the text slowly fades into runes; tap the runes to read it again. A Fading whisper loses its text 10 minutes after it is read, and only the runes stay. In Settings you can have whispers deleted after a week, a month or a year.

What is the wall?

Every profile has a wall. You and your tribe can write on it: carve runes into stone, wood or bone (they stay), draw them in the earth (the wind erases them in 7 days) or in the sand (a wave washes them away in 3 days), or write on a scroll. One person can leave up to 3 posts a day on one wall.

The wall is public: anyone who opens the profile can see it. For something private, write a letter: the Write a letter button on the profile opens the letter form, and the letter never appears on the wall. A reported post is hidden at once.

What are rune cards?

An open card with a name or phrase in runes, made for Reels, TikTok, Stories and Pinterest. Pick a style in Rune cards and save the card as PNG or video for free.

To get a link to the card, sign in and pick a nickname: the card is signed with your @nickname. Cards are public, so the same rules as for the wall apply. After two reports a card is hidden until we check it.

Does the recipient need to install anything?

No. The recipient opens the link in any browser. Installing the app is optional for both of you.

Are these real runes? Can I use them for a tattoo?

Runewing writes your text in Elder Futhark, the runic alphabet of the 2nd–8th centuries, letter by sound. It is a transcription, not a translation into Old Norse. The original text is kept separately, and Decipher shows it exactly.

Elder Futhark is the default; you can also choose Younger Futhark (Viking runes), the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc or medieval runes.

The rune translator shows how a name or phrase looks in runes. Runic spelling has variants, so before a tattoo check the spelling with a specialist.

Which languages does Runewing speak?

English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Russian, German, Turkish, Italian, Polish, Ukrainian and Swedish. The language follows your browser, and you can change it at the top of the page. The recipient sees the letter page in their own language.

Letters and privacy

Who can read my letter?

Anyone who has the link, once the opening rules are met, so send it only to the recipient. The text is stored encrypted and is decrypted only to show it to the recipient, or when we review a complaint. The “From” name shows in link previews, and both names are visible on the letter page before it opens. Details are in Privacy.

What does “burns after reading” mean?

A one-time letter can be read only once. After that nobody can open it again: not the recipient, not you. Other letters are deleted a year after sending, or 30 days after the opening date if that is later.

Where are the letters I sent and received?

In the Letters section. Without signing in, it is kept only in this browser: it isn’t there on another device or after clearing browser data (on iPhone, the Home Screen app has its own storage, separate from Safari). Sign in with Google and your account keeps the list of letters (links, names, seal, courier and date) on all your devices, and letters from your tribe arrive in Received on their own. The text of your letters stays only on the device where you wrote it.

Someone sent me something threatening. What do I do?

Tap Report on the letter page or use the report form. A reported letter is hidden at once. If you are in danger, contact the police.

In Safari on a Mac (macOS Sonoma or later), choose File → Add to Dock.

Why install it, and is it safe?

The app is the same Runewing website, opened in its own window with an icon on your home screen. It doesn’t come from an app store, asks for no permissions, takes almost no space and updates itself. It doesn’t send notifications.

Does the app work offline?

No. Letters are opened through our server and are never saved in the app or on your device. Without a connection the app shows a short notice: reload the page once you are back online.

How do I remove the app?

On Android, touch and hold the icon and tap Uninstall (or App info → Uninstall). On iPhone, touch and hold the icon and choose to remove or delete it. On a computer, open the app, then the menu ⋮ → Uninstall Runewing.

Removing the app doesn’t delete letters you have sent: their links keep working.
